Our bees that buzz around our flowers and blooms near our structures are known as the common honey bee, Apis mellifera. This species is found throughout the world, producing colonies of 20,000 to 80,000 individuals. These colonies can be perennial and are very beneficial in nature. Honey bees are important pollinators, moving from bloom to bloom, in the warm months of the year, gathering pollen and nectar. In doing so, they pollinate plants. This is an important role both in nature and production agriculture.
Only in the sense that they are in the wrong place, at times coming into contact with humans. When left alone to do their important work, they bother no humans.
When bees grow to a certain population size, the bee colony will move from the original colony in a swarm. These swarms should not be disturbed. The bees are docile, for the most part. Local beekeepers will remove the swarm, and are experienced at doing so. Should these swarms be encountered, we will contact a local for you. We do not do swarm removal. Call Pest Medic and speak with our staff entomologist about options regarding bee infestation solutions.

Insect stings are a medical issue, and should be treated as such.
Africanized bees look and act very much like common honey bees, when left alone in nature. However, they exhibit aggressive behavior when disturbed. The bees were imported into Brazil from Africa, and developed into a hybrid species that a good forager, but a very bad neighbor to humans and even animals. They have gradually expanded their range into the United States over the years. They are more aggressive and less predictable than common honey bees, and react as a group, rapidly stinging any perceived threat. This can result in 100’s of stings, and a very serious health issue. They have been found in the Southwest quarter of Oklahoma. Call if you find bees that are exhibiting this aggressive behavior, and we will alert the State Agricultural authorities tasked with monitoring such pests.
