Termites are insects that eat wood. But did you know they are actually beneficial? Termites are far more important to our environment than just eating wood. Termites occur naturally in the soil in Oklahoma, and are a crucial part of the decomposition cycle in nature. As trees, shrub, and other plants grow, they will shed both roots and branches as a natural part of their growth cycle. In addition, as plants die, they fall to the ground, absorb moisture, and begin to decay via fungi and things that help this process. Termites are also a part of that process, ultimately working in concert with other organisms to turn such things as leaves and branches into soil.
Our structures are made of, among other things, wood, and wood products, such as paper, etc., which is why we have to address termite infestations in our structures. Unfortunately for us, subterranean termites are always foraging, and sometimes while foraging, they find the wood in our structures. It is important to protect your homes and structures from termites!
Did you know…
According to the National Pest Management Association (NPMA), termites cause an estimated $5 billion in property damage each year.
Pest Medic Pest Control uses methods and materials that meet or exceed the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture minimum standards required for termite control procedures. All termite control materials used are EPA approved, and our quality control is administered by Tulsa’s only Board Certified Entomologist.
Visual inspection: Our inspector will first conduct a thorough visual inspection of your property to look for signs of termite activity, including such things as mud tubes (subterranean termite foraging tunnels), damaged wood, termite swarms, wings of termites that having swarmed, etc. Inspection will include both the interior, exterior and the crawl space or basement.
Note Conducive Conditions: The inspection may also include noting conditions conducive to termite infestation, such an rotting wood, high moisture levels in portions of structures, water leaks, improper drainage, wood-to-ground contact, and any condition that might encourage termite infestation. Tools used may include moisture meters and borescopes, to gain visual access to interior portions of walls and other hard-to-reach areas.
Provide a detailed report: Following the inspection, a professional inspector will provide a detailed report outlining any findings, as well as recommendations for treatment and prevention of future termite infestations.
Wood Destroying Insect Inspections and Reports
Pest Medic offers wood-destroying insect reports as required for real estate transactions. We use the ODAFF-1 form required by the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, and we use state-of-the-art computerized forms, enabling same-day or next-day completion of reports and digital reports sent via email to the proper parties.
It’s important to note that the specific steps involved in a termite inspection may vary depending on the specific property being inspected and that the inspector is limited to what is visible at the time of inspection.
Our subterranean termite control methods available to homeowners are termite baiting systems and liquid termiticide treatments with Fipronil termiticides.
Termite Baiting Systems:
Termite baiting systems involve the installation of bait stations around the perimeter of the home, typically spaced 10 to 20 feet apart. These stations contain cellulose materials that are attractive to termites. The cellulose material is impregnated with a compound that will be taken back to the colony. The material in the cellulose is a very low-impact product known as a chitin synthesis inhibitor, which will taken back to the colony, eventually leading to the elimination of the colony.
Liquid Termiticide Treatment with Fipronil Termiticides:
Liquid termiticide treatment involves the application of a termiticide solution around the perimeter of the home and at key entry points, such as foundation walls and around plumbing penetrations. Fipronil termiticides are a popular choice due to their effectiveness and long residual control. The termiticide solution is applied directly to the soil or injected into the soil to create a treated zone that will kill termites on contact and contaminate the workers, who carry the Fipronil material to the rest of the colony, ultimately killing the entire colony.
Both of these methods have proven to be effective in controlling subterranean termites. However, it is important to note that the effectiveness of these methods will depend on a variety of factors, including the severity of the infestation, the species of termites present, and the type of treatment applied. We inspect and evaluate your termite infestation, developing a prescription treatment for treating termites in your home or structure.
Borate treatments are another effective method of subterranean termite control. Borates are naturally occurring minerals that are derived from boron, a non-toxic element found in the earth’s crust. These minerals are often used as a wood preservative, as they are toxic to a variety of insects, including termites. An additional benefit is that borates also kill and prevent fungal growth.
Borate treatments work by treating a borate solution on the wood of a structure, which is then absorbed by the wood and provides long-term protection against termites. This treatment is effective against both drywood and subterranean termites, as it is able to penetrate deep into the wood and kill the termites within.
One of the benefits of borate treatments is that they are relatively low toxicity and safe for humans and pets, as long as they are used in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Borate treatments are also long-lasting, as the borate solution will remain in the wood for many years and provide ongoing protection against termites.
The baiting system currently used by Pest Medic Pest Control is the Trelona ATBS system made by BASF. To learn more about Trelona ATBS:

Swarming Termites vs. Ants
Swarming termites are often confused with swarming ants. Both are the winged reproductives of the respective groups.
Ants- narrow waists, unequal wing length
Termites-broad waists, equal wing length

Reduce moisture: Termites thrive in moist environments, so it’s essential to keep your home dry. Fix any leaks, reduce humidity levels, and improve ventilation in crawl spaces and attics. Do not let mulch and grass clippings accumulate at the base the foundation of the exterior of structures.
Remove food sources: Termites feed on wood and cellulose materials. Remove any old stumps, firewood, paper, cardboard, and debris around or under your home. Also, avoid storing cardboard boxes or paper products in damp areas.
Correct all wood to ground contact on structure, such as posts extending into soil.
Use treated wood: When building or renovating your home, use treated wood that is resistant to termite infestation. Treated wood has been impregnated with chemicals that repel termites. Treat existing wood with borate products to prevent infestation.

Install physical barriers: Installing physical barriers like stainless steel mesh or sand barriers can prevent termites from entering your home. These barriers should be installed during the construction phase.
Regular inspections: Schedule regular termite inspections with a Pest Medic Termite Pro. This can help catch termite infestations early and prevent extensive damage to your home.
An ounce of prevention… Great choices for the prevention of subterranean termites is the pretreatment of the area under concrete slabs of structures under construction, and bait system installation on existing structures. Both are effective ways to intercept foraging termites and kill the colony before they start an infestation in your property. Contact Pest Medic for details.
